I’ve always loved creating “stuff,” and have had several hobbies over the years: tinkering with sports cars; pen and ink drawings of old brownstone buildings; making wooden plant stands, slab ceramic pottery and stained glass windows.
Then there was a period of refinishing and selling antique furniture while opening a woodstove store. And a decades-long love-hate relationship with golf.
But nothing has been as rewarding as woodworking. Making something entirely unique. Designing and drawing. Selecting the beautiful hardwood lumber and roughing out the shapes. Savoring the smell of sawdust and sanding/finishing the items to bring out the gorgeous wood grains. Then standing back and saying “Hey, I made that.” Very satisfying. (Except for the rejects, which I recycle.)
Most woodworkers probably start by making small items like boxes, but I dove right in with tables. Lots of tables. Gave a couple away. Sold quite a few, and am still making them. Now cutting boards, trays and home accessories are also coming out of the workshop.
